Taking Europe’s borderless travel area “hostage” to appease populists will backfire, Luxembourg’s home affairs minister has warned.
Europe’s knee-jerk response to the Ceuta migration crisis was to threaten Spain with suspension from the Schengen area, which comprises 29 countries that have removed ID checks at their borders.
While most governments backed away from that step just days later, Italy and Germany seized on the dramatic influx of people from Morocco to impose and extend their own internal border checks.
Italy introduced checks on arrivals from Spain, while Germany maintained controls on all of its neighbouring countries, including Luxembourg, the spiritual home of the Schengen agreement.
