After facing initial selling pressure from investors locking in gains, the Athens Stock Exchange rallied Tuesday to close with modest gains.
The ASE General Index gained 0.65% to close at 2,628.73. Blue chips gained 0.71% and the banking sub-index slightly outperformed, rising 1.12%. Mid-caps gained 1.51%.
Cenergy outperformed all blue chips, rising 4.39%, followed by Bank of Cyprus (3.32%). Alpha Bank, Optima bank and Jumbo rose more than 2%.
By contrast, CrediaBank, Aegean, Coca-Cola HBC and EYDAP lost more than 1%.
Dimitris Tzanas, CEO of Kyklos brokers, noted that global optimism over developments in the Middle East has combined with better than expected midyear results from banks to boost the Athens stock market.
