A man charged with the mysterious stabbing death of an emergency responder on the Aegean Sea island of Syros last month will be remanded in custody pending trial, a council of judges decided Tuesday.
The panel rejected the recommendation by the public prosecutor handling the case that the 41-year-old man should remain under house arrest, as he has been since the July 23 killing.
The suspect’s wife, who has also been charged in the case, has been set free pending trial on condition that she doesn’t leave the country and makes regular appearances at the local police station.
The 42-year-old emergency responder died of a single stab wound after an altercation when she turned up, masked, hooded and armed with a knife, at the couple’s home in Ano Syros, in the island capital of Ermoupoli. The full circumstances of her death are unclear.
The 41-year-old suspect said he was eating when the victim allegedly rang his bell and tried to stab first his wife who opened the door and then himself with her knife. He claimed that he used his own table knife to defend himself, stabbing her once while she was still in the house.
