The family of a 41-year-old emergency responder who died after a confrontation on the island of Syros last week said Tuesday that a reconstruction of the incident reinforced their belief that she was the victim of an attack, not an act of self-defense.
Through their lawyer, the family of the woman, who worked for Greece’s national ambulance service (EKAB), said the fatal blow was inflicted outside the suspects’ home, at least 50 meters away, rejecting the couple’s claim that the man acted in self-defense.
“Following the seven-second reconstruction inside the defendants’ home, in the presence of investigative authorities, we remain steadfast in our belief – and even more convinced – that the fatal blow was inflicted outside the residence, at a distance of at least 50-70 meters,” the family said in a statement. “Our position that this was an aggressive and not a defensive act has been significantly strengthened.”
The reconstruction was carried out as part of an investigation into the circumstances of the woman’s death. A 41-year-old man has been charged with causing fatal bodily harm, while his 31-year-old wife faces a charge of aiding and abetting.
The couple has claimed that the woman entered their home in Ano Syros intending to rob them and that the man acted in self-defense during a struggle. The victim’s family has disputed that account.
