Just days after the Spar Proteas wrapped up their Commonwealth Games campaign with a 62-54 victory over Uganda to secure fifth place in Glasgow, South African netball's attention turns to the competition that has long shaped the national team.
The Spar National Netball Championships get under way in Cape Town on Wednesday, with the country's biggest inter-district tournament once again providing the clearest pathway from district netball to the international stage.
Hosted at Stellenberg High School and Gene Louw Primary School from August 6-11, the championships will feature 122 teams – comprising 58 senior district sides and 64 under-21 teams – with almost 1 900 players and 100 umpires converging on the Mother City for six days of competition.
While senior and junior titles will be up for grabs, the tournament's reputation extends far beyond silverware. Over the years, it has become Netball South Africa's premier talent identification platform, with many current and former Spar Proteas first catching the eye at the annual championships before progressing into the national set-up.
