Johannesburg won their fourth consecutive Senior Spar National Netball Championships title in Boksburg in December in Ekurhuleni, but can expect a fight from beaten finalists Cape Town as they aim to make it five straight at this year's edition at Stellenberg High School next month.

Johannesburg will begin their quest for an unprecedented fifth successive Spar National Netball Championships title when South Africa's premier inter-district tournament gets under way in Cape Town from August 6-11.

The defending champions return to Stellenberg High School with a formidable record to uphold, having edged hosts Cape Town 52-51 in last year's gripping senior final in Boksburg. That victory capped a remarkable turnaround for the Joburg side, who had previously fallen to their Cape rivals during the round-robin phase.

In addition to the senior title, Johannesburg will defend their Under-21 crown. A total of 122 teams — comprising 58 senior district sides and 64 Under-21 squads — will compete across six days in what serves as one of the country's main talent identification platforms.

Despite chasing a fifth straight crown, Johannesburg coach Elsje Jordaan insisted her squad is approaching the tournament without the weight of history.
