Bulgaria is heading toward the peak of a powerful heat wave, with temperatures expected to reach up to 43°C in some regions as the country faces its hottest period of the summer.
Forecasters warn that temperatures will continue rising gradually throughout the week, increasing by around one to two degrees each day. By the end of the week, parts of the country are expected to experience extreme heat, with values of up to 40°C widely possible.
The hottest areas are expected to be along the Danube River and in the Struma valley, where temperatures could cross the 40-degree mark and reach 42-43°C, according to forecasts cited by NOVA.
The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) warned that the upcoming heat peak will likely not be the last for the summer. Forecasts indicate that traditionally warmer areas in Bulgaria could again approach 43°C toward the end of August.
The heat wave will affect the entire Balkan Peninsula and is expected to gradually weaken in the second half of the month.
