After weeks of emotional testimony, expert medical evidence and heated legal arguments, the murder trial of Duncan Hoorn ended this week with the State closing its case, leaving the spotlight firmly on the defence and the possibility that the accused himself could finally testify.
The Western Cape High Court, currently sitting in the Wynberg Regional Court, heard from several key witnesses over the past week before the prosecution rested its case against Hoorn, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, murder and defeating the administration of justice following the death of his wife, Chantel Pasqualle-Hoorn.
One of the week's biggest legal developments came when Acting Judge Amanda van Leeve granted the State's application to admit a written statement made by Chantel's late nephew, Keanu Pasqualle.
Keanu was expected to testify but was shot and killed before the trial commenced.
