The Bulgarian passport ranks 11th worldwide in terms of travel freedom, according to the latest Henley Passport Index, placing it just one position behind the United States passport.
The ranking shows that Bulgarian citizens can travel visa-free to 178 countries, only two fewer than holders of US passports. Bulgaria shares its position with Romania in the global ranking, which evaluates passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without obtaining a visa in advance.
The Henley Passport Index has tracked passport strength for two decades, using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to rank countries according to visa-free travel opportunities.
Bulgaria’s passport has significantly improved compared with previous years. Its lowest position was recorded in 2006, when it ranked 29th globally.
The top position in the latest ranking belongs to Singapore, whose passport provides visa-free access to 193 countries.
