Jamshid Azizi, a former political prisoner and cellmate of Karim Khojasteh, who is incarcerated in Lakan Prison in Rasht, announced in a post on X that Khojasteh’s death sentence had been commuted to 12 years and six months in prison.

According to the report, the Supreme Court overturned Khojasteh’s death sentence and remanded the case to Branch 1 of the Rasht Revolutionary Court for retrial.

Under the newly issued verdict, Khojasteh was sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison, a ruling that will now proceed to the Court of Appeals for review.

Khojasteh, 64, a father of two, was originally sentenced to death solely on charges of hanging several protest banners.

Milad Panahipour, his defence attorney, previously stated that his client’s case file contained no evidence of violence or armed activity whatsoever.
