Iran's Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of a 30-year-old boxer and political prisoner after rejecting his request for a retrial and sending his case to the execution unit.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency reported that Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani, who is currently held in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, was notified that his request for retrial had been denied.

Prison officials then contacted his family to inform them that his case file had been transferred to the execution enforcement office in Mashhad, the organization said, citing an informed source.

Authorities unexpectedly granted Vafaei Sani's mother permission for an in-person visit, the source said - a development that, combined with the case transfer, suggests the execution may be imminent.

Vafaei Sani was arrested in March 2020 and charged with “corruption on Earth” for allegedly setting fires and destroying public property.
