Iran’s Supreme Court has overturned a death sentence for a Kurdish political prisoner and ordered a retrial, citing deficiencies in the investigation and failure to follow legal procedures.
Branch 9 of the Supreme Court annulled the verdict against Varisheh Moradi that was issued by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, lawyer Mostafa Nili said.
The case has been returned to the same court for review.
The Supreme Court found that the lower court failed to properly inform Moradi of the charges that formed the basis for the death sentence, among other procedural violations, Nili said.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network reported that lawyers were formally notified of the decision on Wednesday when they appeared at the Supreme Court.
