Every week The Slovak Spectator brings you a selection of three short stories from across Slovakia from which pessimism and negativity are absent.
In the village of Lúčky near Ružomberok, the 12-metre-high Lúčanský waterfall is one of Slovakia's most distinctive natural landmarks. Located right in the village centre, just a short walk from the bus stop, it attracts visitors not only for its scenery but also for the small natural pool at its base. During summer, many people step into the cold water for a quick refresh. A sign installed in 2015 reminds visitors that bathing is at their own risk due to the slippery stone surface and natural riverbed.
The waterfall is also a geological rarity. Minerals carried by the water continue to form new layers of travertine – a type of limestone – meaning the rock is still developing today. The location has also appeared on screen, serving as one of the filming locations for the Italian fantasy series Fantaghirò. For the production, filmmakers transformed the waterfall into the entrance of a magical cave by covering it with artificial vegetation.
