Every week The Slovak Spectator brings you a selection of three short stories from across Slovakia from which pessimism and negativity are absent.
A hotel in Bratislava is providing guests with an unusual welcome. Instead of being greeted only by the reception staff, visitors to the Hotel Devín can also meet Robi, a humanoid robot who is "working" as a front-of-house assistant. He chats with guests, recommends coffee, helps visitors find their way around the hotel, and can even point them towards popular places to visit in Bratislava.
Robi is not just there to answer questions. He also entertains guests with dance moves, making him one of the hotel's biggest attractions. While he can handle conversation – in Slovak, English, Spanish and Russian – and provide basic assistance, he struggles to navigate stairs and other obstacles. The hotel plans to expand his role in the future, with the goal of having him accompany guests all the way to their rooms.
