Every week The Slovak Spectator brings you a selection of three short stories from across Slovakia from which pessimism and negativity are absent.
Bratislava Zoo recently welcomed a baby pygmy hippo, one of the rarest hippo species in the world, website TN Live reports. The female calf, named Bawu, was born during the last week of May and represents a major success for the zoo, as breeding pygmy hippos is considered extremely difficult and unpredictable. Her name means "precious gift" or "long-awaited miracle" in several African languages – a fitting choice for one of Slovakia’s newest stars.
Despite a challenging start, little Bawu is thriving. Zoo staff say she is energetic, healthy, and steadily gaining weight under round-the-clock care. Her mother, Dinba, is recovering from post-birth complications and is being treated with the support of veterinary experts, including specialists from Basel Zoo. For now, mother and daughter remain mostly behind the scenes, but visitors may soon get their first glimpse of the adorable newcomer.
