Greece has placed 11 regions on high alert as authorities prepare for severe weather expected to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and possible hail from Friday through Saturday.
The National Meteorological Service (EMY) issued an emergency weather warning, prompting the Civil Protection Ministry to activate its national response mechanism and place affected areas under “Red Code” mobilization.
The measure requires authorities to deploy personnel, equipment and emergency resources in preparation for possible flooding, storm damage and other hazards.
The Risk Assessment Committee, convened by Civil Protection Secretary-General Nikos Papaefstathiou, said the most intense weather on Friday is expected in the Sporades islands, central and northern Evia, and coastal areas of Larissa and Magnesia. Storms are also forecast for Attica, including Athens, as well as parts of Central Macedonia and Central Greece.
The affected areas include Attica, Thessaloniki, Pieria, Imathia, Halkidiki, Larissa, Magnesia, the Sporades, Evia, Thasos, Samothrace and Lemnos.
