Five young lives lost in Ikageng shack fire tragedy.

Five children, aged between one and nine years old died in a devastating shack fire in the Sonderwater informal settlement in Ikageng on Sunday night - marking the second deadly fire involving children in the area in less than two weeks.

North West police said officers responded to reports of a shack fire shortly before midnight on 19 July 2026. Upon arrival, they found the structure completely destroyed by flames, with the bodies of five children inside.

Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) attended the scene and certified all five children dead.

According to preliminary police investigations, the children had allegedly been left home alone by their mothers, who are sisters, while they visited a nearby location.
