The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office deputies said the investigation began in the morning when they were assisting the Grand Haven Fire Department with a house fire.Police and fire authorities raced to the scene between 8:30am and 9am local time about the smell of smoke in the area. However, no fire was immediately found, according to deputies.Around 11:40am, deputies and fire personnel returned to the area when they received calls about white smoke showing from a residence in the 14900-block of Riverside Trail.Emergency services stayed at the scene on Grand Haven Township, on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan until it was safe to leave. When they went inside, they made the horror discovery of finding eight dead people, Capt. Jacob Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said at an evening news conference.Sparks said authorities had not fully identified all the victims yet and an official cause of death for them has not yet been formerly established. He did confirm the children's ages ranged from 5 to 15 and he did not specify how many of the eight people had gunshot wounds.“It’s a complicated scene, a complex scene," Sparks said.He said investigators were not looking for outside suspects and that one theory so far is a murder-suicide. He said everyone that lived in the home appeared to be deceased.Sparks said the fire was “suspicious” and that there was reason to believe it was intentionally set.
