A 46-year-old mother and her three young children died in a devastating house fire that tore through their Sebokeng home in the early hours of Saturday morning, leaving a grieving husband as the sole survivor of the tragedy.

According to reports, the family of five was asleep when flames engulfed their home in Zone 12, Sebokeng. Police said the 39-year-old father woke up after suspecting that an electrical fault may have occurred inside the house.

Sebokeng police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane said the situation unfolded rapidly when the man attempted to investigate the source of the problem.

“The husband woke up to check as he thought it may be an electrical fault. As he tried to go where the main switch is situated, a huge flame erupted inside the house. The three children who were sleeping suffocated and died in their bedroom. The mother also died while in her bedroom, but the husband managed to escape through the kitchen and survived.”
