Temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius in some regions on Monday, as the first heat wave of summer is forecast to peak across Greece, according to weather data.
The highest temperatures are expected in Central Macedonia, Agrinio, the Thessaly plain, Central Greece and the Peloponnese, while the weather will be very hot on the islands. The heat will ease Wednesday, starting from the north.
Athens, Lamia, Thessaloniki and Tripoli are among the cities likely to experience particularly high temperatures.
A gradual cooldown is expected from Tuesday into Wednesday, as cooler air masses move in from the northwest. The drop in temperatures will not occur simultaneously across the country, with northern Greece expected to cool first.
