Temperatures are expected to climb close to or above 40°C in some lowland areas on Monday, as a spell of intense summer heat is forecast to peak across Greece, according to the latest weather data.
The hottest conditions are expected on Sunday and especially Monday, with the highest heat load affecting vulnerable inland areas. Athens, Lamia, Thessaloniki and Tripoli are among the regions likely to experience particularly high temperatures.
A gradual cooldown is expected from Tuesday into Wednesday, as cooler air masses move in from the northwest. The drop in temperatures will not occur simultaneously across the country, with northern Greece expected to see relief first.
Thessaloniki is forecast to experience an earlier and more noticeable decline, while Athens, Lamia and parts of the eastern and southern mainland may remain under the influence of warmer conditions for longer.
