Heatwave conditions are expected to persist across much of Greece through the middle of next week, with temperatures forecast to reach 38-40 degrees Celsius and locally climb to 41-42C, according to forecasters.

Data from the National Observatory of Athens’ meteo.gr site indicate that temperatures will rise slightly further over the weekend.

On Saturday, temperatures will remain well above seasonal averages and are expected to reach 38-39C on the mainland and locally 40C, while temperatures on the islands will range from 35 to 37C.

Little change is expected on Sunday, with temperatures again forecast to reach 38-39C on the mainland and locally 40C, and 35-37C on the islands.

Forecast maps show that air masses over Greece at an altitude of 1,500 meters will be 6-8C warmer than the seasonal average on Saturday and Tuesday.
