Heavy traffic clogged major roads leaving Athens on Friday as thousands of residents departed the capital for summer holidays.
Long delays were reported on Kifissos Avenue, one of the city’s main exit routes, with congestion stretching from Poseidonos Avenue to Metamorfosi in northern Athens. Slow-moving traffic was also recorded on the Athens-Corinth highway, while sections of the Attiki Odos toll highway experienced delays of more than 30 minutes.
Passenger traffic was also elevated at Greece’s ports. Fifty-seven ferry departures were scheduled from Piraeus, the country’s largest port, carrying nearly 19,000 passengers to destinations including the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese islands. Additional sailings were planned from the ports of Rafina and Lavrio.
