Tens of thousands of holidaymakers left the Greater Athens region by ferry over the weekend for island destinations, at the peak of the annual summer wave of departures.
Authorities have appealed to travellers to make a point of reaching their ports of departure in good time, particularly if they are driving, as traffic conditions in roads leading to the harbors can be highly congested.
Nearly 62,000 people boarded ferries at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio, with 80 ships leaving Piraeus alone carrying more than 40,000 passengers – about 11,500 of whom were heading for the nearby islands of Aigina, Hydra, Spetses and Poros.
Dozens of ships are also due to depart for the islands Sunday from the three ports.
