Passenger traffic surged at Attica’s three main ports on Thursday as the last wave of travellers left Athens ahead of a major August 15 bank holiday.
The Cycladic islands of Tinos and Paros were among the most popular destinations due to the popular celebrations held in local churches for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Piraeus will be handling the largest share of passenger traffic with 24 ferries scheduled to depart from the port on Thursday for the islands of the Aegean, while another 22 ships and 33 high-speed boats and flying dolphins are scheduled to travel to the islands of the Saronic Gulf.
Port authorities said 15 passenger ferries are expected to depart from Rafina and another nine from Lavrio.
