Passenger traffic was expected to increase Saturday at the ports serving Athens as travelers headed to Greek islands for the August 15 Dormition holiday, despite disruptions caused by strong winds.
A total of 45,229 passengers left the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio on Friday, marking the peak of the holiday exodus.
Most Saturday morning departures were concentrated at Piraeus, Greece’s main port, as sailing restrictions remained in effect until 1 p.m. at Rafina and Lavrio.
At Piraeus, 21,893 passengers were scheduled to depart Saturday. Two services were canceled because of the weather: the Blue Star Paros to Syros, Tinos and Mykonos, and the Super Speed Jet 4 to Paros, Naxos and Koufonisia.
Authorities urged passengers to check with ferry operators before traveling to the ports.
