Two 42-year-old men arrested in connection with the 2010 Marfin Bank arson attack in central Athens, which claimed the lives of three employees, have been sent to prisons in Nafplio and Malandrino after being remanded in custody.
The suspects, who face multiple counts of premeditated murder, were detained pending trial after giving statements to the investigating magistrate.
Their defense has challenged the reliability of the case file. “There is no identification of the people accused in this case with the people in the photos,” said Thanasis Kampagiannis, lawyer for one of the defendants.
The defense also disputes the credibility of an anonymous email that reportedly helped revive the investigation and led to the arrests. It argues that authorities should identify the sender so they can testify during the judicial inquiry.
The arson attack occurred during a large demonstration in central Athens in the early stages of Greece’s financial crisis.
