Two of the three suspects accused of carrying out the arson attack on the Thessaloniki home of a New Democracy official, in which her mother was killed, have been remanded in custody after appearing before an investigating magistrate.

The July 1 attack on the family home of Afroditi Nestora claimed the life of her 75-year-old mother, Vagia Nestora, and injured her father and two other residents of the apartment building.

In brief written statements, the two defendants – a 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman – denied the serious charges against them, claiming they were the victims of a “frame-up” that was being “used for public relations purposes.”

The third suspect, a 24-year-old man, requested additional time to prepare his testimony and is due to appear before the magistrate on Wednesday. During the preliminary investigation, he reportedly said he did not know his co-defendants and had merely given the keys to a property to friends, unaware it would allegedly be used as a base of operations and hideout for the arson attack.
