The first phase of the judicial investigation into an arson attack in Thessaloniki that killed Vagia Nestora and injured her daughter, lawyer and New Democracy candidate Afroditi Nestora, concluded on Wednesday with the pretrial detention of a third suspect.
A 24-year-old student was remanded after testimony before an investigating judge and prosecutor. All three defendants are now in custody, following the earlier detention of a 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman.
According to reports, the student denied involvement. He said he did not know the purpose for which an abandoned house he had made available was used, although prosecutors allege it served the suspected perpetrators before and after the attack. He said he had given the keys to a university acquaintance.
Afroditi Nestora was discharged from the hospital after two weeks. She said recovery will require months of treatment and expressed confidence justice will impose the harshest penalties.
