Three police officers have been charged with involvement in a gang that allegedly imported and sold large quantities of banned anabolic steroids in Greece, authorities said Friday.
A police statement said three people – including the one policeman – were arrested on suspicion of gang membership, and another suspect who lives abroad has been identified and is being sought. Another 11 people, including the other two police officers, face charges associated with the ring.
Police said a series of raids in the Greater Athens region Thursday led to the seizure of more than 110,000 pills and nearly 8,000 vials of anabolic steroids, as well as small quantities of drugs.
The steroids had an estimated street value of €500,000. While illegal, they are typically used by athletes or body-builders to enhance their performance.
