Greek police have arrested 14 people allegedly involved in the production and distribution of anabolic steroids and other banned substances from a makeshift laboratory operating in the basement of a pharmacy in Halandri, northern Athens.

The pharmacy’s 51-year-old owner is among those arrested and is suspected of leading the operation, police said. Authorities reported that a fully equipped illegal laboratory had been installed underground, producing pharmaceutical products not authorized by EOF, Greece’s National Organization for Medicines.

Investigators said qualified biologists were part of the production team.

During the raid, police seized more than 40,000 packages of pharmaceutical and doping substances, 13 kilos of raw materials, over €47,000 in cash, mobile phones, a computer, and handwritten records.
