Western Cape police have launched investigations into two mass shootings that unfolded within 20 minutes of each other on Wednesday evening, leaving seven people dead and five others wounded in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, and Philippi East.
The first shooting occurred at about 8.10pm at the corner of Laura Street and 8th Avenue in Lost City, Tafelsig, where five men were standing outside a local tuck shop when armed suspects approached and opened fire.
Three victims, aged 18, 19 and 51, were declared dead at the scene after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, while two others, aged 17 and 22, were rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
Just 20 minutes later, police responded to another shooting at a residence in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East, where seven people had been shot. Four victims, aged between 17 and 20, died from their injuries, while three others were admitted to hospital.
“The circumstances surrounding both incidents are the subject of ongoing investigations. Detectives are pursuing all available leads to identify and apprehend those responsible,” Western Cape police said.
