Police investigate mass shooting on the Cape Flats.

Seven people are dead and five wounded after two shootings ripped through Mitchells Plain and Philippi East within 20 minutes of each other on Wednesday night, in what police are treating as gang-related violence.

The first attack hit at around 8.10 pm on the corner of Laura Street and 8th Avenue in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, where gunmen opened fire on five men standing outside a tuck shop.

Three of the victims, aged 18, 19 and 51, died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Two others, aged 17 and 22, were taken to hospital for treatment.

Just 20 minutes later, police responded to a second shooting at a residence in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East, where seven people had been shot. Four victims, aged between 17 and 20, died from their injuries, while three others were admitted to hospital.
