Police have arrested a 32-year-old man suspected of being the leader of a criminal group allegedly responsible for a series of ATM bombings across Greece that netted the gang €440,000.
The arrest followed a months-long investigation by the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (DAOE), known as the “Greek FBI.”
Authorities said the man had been wanted on charges including participation in a criminal organization, attempted murder, explosions and aggravated theft. He had previously been arrested for two similar cases but was released on restrictive conditions.
According to investigators, the group allegedly used stolen vehicles from Attica to travel to provincial areas, where they primarily targeted isolated ATMs. Members were reportedly heavily armed and used cutting tools and improvised explosive devices to break into cash safes and remove money boxes.
Police said the group also took extensive counter-surveillance measures, including avoiding the use of mobile phones during operations.
