What began as a nostalgic game drawn with chalk on the streets of Westridge has, five years later, grown into one of Mitchells Plain's most unique community sporting events.
The annual Wimbledon in the Plain once again brought together residents of all ages at the Westridge Gardens tennis courts, celebrating not only the spirit of tennis, but also the childhood games that defined generations growing up on the Cape Flats.
The initiative first started on Bordeaux Road in Westridge after founder Rodney Scarra Brown and radio host Aden Thomas brainstormed the idea, determined to keep the tradition of street tennis alive and introduced the game to younger generations.
Played using chalk or sand to mark out makeshift courts and potato or onion bags as makeshift nets, street tennis became a favourite pastime for many children during the annual Wimbledon Championships, long before formal tennis courts were accessible to many communities.
