As Mitchell’s Plain marks its 50th anniversary, many inspiring stories of faith and resilience have shaped the vibrant community amidst trials and many triumphs.
One such story is that of the Jumaah Mosque, in Westridge, the area’s first mosque, built by the Mitchell’s Plain Islamic Trust.
Now, over 40 years old, it stands as a cornerstone of the community, a testament to the pioneers who arrived when the dunes of the Cape Flats were first being transformed into homes.
Member of the Regional Imaamat Councils (RICs) operating under the Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa (MJC-SA), Maulana Tawfeeq Ely, reflecting on the role these institutions played in the early days, said: “It connects us to something bigger than ourselves".
