The proposed Mitchells Plain Convenience Centre would be developed on privately owned erven at 2 Putney Avenue, 2 Sunbird Road and 1 Sunbird Road, opposite Westgate Mall, if approved by the Municipal Planning Tribunal.
While some residents have welcomed the prospect of investment and job creation that a new shopping centre would bring to Mitchells Plain, others have questioned the consultation process and raised concerns about the impact the development could have on the surrounding community.
The application, known as the Mitchells Plain Convenience Centre, proposes the subdivision, rezoning, permanent departures and approval of a site development plan for erven at 2 Putney Avenue, 2 Sunbird Road and 1 Sunbird Road in Rondevlei Park, Weltevreden Valley.
The privately owned properties are situated opposite Westgate Mall.
Sub-council 17 chairperson and Ward 43 councillor Elton Jansen addressed the application in a video shared on the sub-council's WhatsApp channel after what he described as misinformation began circulating about the proposal.
