A total 14 water-dropping aircraft were deployed to assist more than a hundred firefighters on the ground battling a major blaze in the southern Peloponnese region Monday evening, as authorities rushed reinforcements to the site and ordered one village evacuated.

The evacuation order for the village of Aghia Eleni near Trizina in the northeastern Peloponnese came shortly after residents and visitors were warned to be ready to leave fast if needed.

No injuries or damage to property were immediately reported.

A total 110 firefighters with 23 fire engines struggled to tame the flames, while ten water-bombing planes and four water-bombing helicopters flew sorties and two helicopters coordinated the operation from the air.

Earlier, firefighters battled three big wildfires on the southern island of Crete, most of which had been designated at a major risk of fire Monday together with islands in the central Aegean Sea.
