Water-dropping aircraft and ground forces were battling three wildfires in mainland Greece Thursday, as about half the country faced a category-3 risk on a 5-notch scale.
The Fire Service said four aircraft were flying sorties to help 35 firefighters in their efforts to contain a blaze near the village of Kremasti in the Sparta region of the southern Peloponnese.
Two more wildfires were coursing through forest and farmland near the villages of Palamas in the central Karditsa region and Paralimni in the northern Serres area.
For Friday, civil protection authorities have set most of the country on a category-3 risk level, including nearly the entire Peloponnese, central Greece with the Greater Athens region and the island of Evia, northwestern Greece, Crete and nearly all the Aegean Sea islands.
