A large plantation of more than 1,500 cannabis saplings that could have produced up to €2.3 million worth of marijuana has been located and destroyed in the southern Peloponnese region, authorities said Friday.
A police statement said the farm had been set up in a remote forested area whose lush greenery provided ample cover from prying eyes near the village of Dendroulia in the vicinity of Pylos, in the southwestern Peloponnese.
Two people suspected to have lived on the farm, looking after the saplings and doubling as guards for the valuable crop, were arrested in a raid Friday. They were only identified as foreign nationals.
Police said they have also identified and are seeking a Greek man for involvement with the farm.
A total 1,532 saplings up to 2.2 meters in height were uprooted, while police also confiscated 6 kilometers of hosepipe used to irrigate the farm, drawing from a stone-built reservoir lined with plastic sheeting that could hold up to 5 tons of water.
