The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has advised motorists that traffic on the N3 westbound towards Pietermaritzburg will be diverted onto newly constructed lanes between the EB Cloete Interchange and the Pavilion/Spine Road off-ramp from Thursday, July 2.

SANRAL said a brief rolling road closure will be required to safely implement the traffic switch. The operation will be managed by the on-site traffic accommodation team with assistance from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI).

KwaZulu-Natal Project Engineer Mpho Nephembani said the change is necessary to allow for widening works on the N3 westbound carriageway.

The westbound carriageway will remain open throughout the construction period, and motorists will not need to alter their travel routes. However, road users should expect a revised lane configuration, adjusted barriers and temporary road markings through the construction zone.

The temporary traffic arrangement is expected to remain in place for about a year, after which traffic will be moved back onto the existing westbound carriageway.
