The South African National Roads Agency Limited’s (Sanral’s) R6-billion project to upgrade the N3 highway between Mariannhill Toll Plaza section 1 and Key Ridge section 2 has started.
The State-owned roads company says the project will take 60 months to complete.
The contract covers the upgrade of an 11.1-km section of the N3 and is being managed through Sanral's KwaZulu-Natal provincial office in Pietermaritzburg.
Work to be carried out includes the widening and upgrading of the existing N3 carriageways; the construction and rehabilitation of road pavement layers; the construction of two new viaduct bridges and drainage structures; and improvements to stormwater infrastructure, including pipe crossings, subsurface drainage systems, and concrete and earth drains.
The contract also includes the construction of concrete median barriers between carriageways, major culverts, as well as retaining walls and mechanically stabilised earth walls.
