Two people died after a taxi struck them on Helsinki's Itäväylä motorway during the early hours of Tuesday before the driver left the scene, police said. The victims, a man and a woman both aged about 30, died at the scene near Kulosaari metro station after the collision shortly before 12.30am.

Police later arrested the suspected driver in the Itäkeskus area and are investigating the case as aggravated drink driving, aggravated causing of death and aggravated endangerment of traffic safety. The charges remain preliminary and may change as the investigation continues.

Investigators said the car was travelling eastbound from the direction of the Redi shopping centre when it hit the two pedestrians, who were on the carriageway.
