An unattended tourist bus rolled downhill in central Helsinki on Saturday and struck a woman crossing a street near Senate Square, leaving her with serious injuries and prompting a police investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

The accident took place shortly before 1pm on Unioninkatu, one of the streets surrounding Helsinki's Senate Square. According to police, a parked bus began moving on its own and travelled several dozen metres down the slope before colliding with a pedestrian at a crossing near the corner of the square.

Emergency services received the alert at 12.50pm and dispatched police, paramedics and rescue personnel to the scene. Security staff already present in the area also assisted in the response.
