A 57-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of intentionally starting a wildfire in the Corinthia region of southern Greece, the Fire Service said.
The fire broke out at 6.46 p.m. Sunday in dry grassland in Corinthia. Authorities launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze and identified the woman as a suspect.
The investigation found that the woman allegedly started the fire using an open flame, causing the dry vegetation to catch fire, according to the Fire Service. She was arrested and is expected to appear before a prosecutor.
The Fire Service said the case marks the ninth alleged intentional arson case to be solved since the beginning of the year. Of 134 arrests made through June 28 for violations of fire protection laws, nine involved suspected intentional arson, while the remaining 125 were linked to fires caused by negligence.
