A 76-year-old man arrested late Saturday for starting the fire near the Thessaloniki suburb of Oreokastro was provisionally released Sunday until the investigation is completed.
The old man admitted that, while trying to unstuck his car from a dirt road, his wheels spun and caused sparks to fly that started the fire, which spread quickly, due to the high winds.
When they arrested him, authorities said the man was showing clear signs of inebriation. But tests to determine the level of alcohol in his blood have not been completed.
The man is facing a charge of starting a fire inadvertently.
