Four people have been arrested for accidentally starting wildfires over the past 24 hours, authorities said Tuesday, as the Fire Service was summoned to deal with more than 30 blazes.
A Fire Service statement said one of the four arrests was over a forest fire that broke out on the island of Evia, while the rest were in fields and land covered in low scrub.
In addition to the arrests, nine people were fined a total €28,600 for lighting fires to burn stubble, using machinery that produced sparks outdoors or dumping flammable materials, the Fire Service said.
Over the past 24 hours firefighters battled 30 wildfires in various parts of the country, with all but three being extinguished before they could cause significant damage.
