Greece’s Fire Service said Monday that 64 wildland fires broke out across the country over the past 48 hours, with most incidents attributed to negligence during outdoor work or other activities.
According to the Fire Service, initial assessments indicate human carelessness as the primary cause in most cases, though investigations are ongoing. Specialized units are examining all incidents to determine exact causes and assign responsibility where applicable.
Officials said recent high temperatures contributed to ignition risk and rapid fire spread, but noted that most blazes were contained early due to swift firefighting response, preventing any threat to populated areas.
From January 1 through June 7, authorities imposed 402 administrative fines totaling 383,397.05 euros and made 71 arrests under automatic procedures for violations of fire prevention laws, the service said.
