Greek authorities have made seven arrests in a day and levied about €23,000 in fines in various parts of the country over breaches of fire safety regulations during the summer wildfire season, the Fire Service said Wednesday.
The people arrested Tuesday included a 50-year-old man in the Spata region east of Athens who had been allegedly having a barbecue in the open within 300 meters of a forest. He was also fined €3,000.
The entire Attica region surrounding the Greek capital has been on a high wildfire risk level for the past week amid high winds and arid, hot weather conditions.
Another two people were arrested and fined €3,000 each in the Greater Athens region and in Markopoulo east of the capital for allegedly doing work outdoors with machinery that produced heat or sparks.
And on the eastern Aegean Sea island of Chios, a man was fined €3,000 for having a barbecue in the open, while in the Nafplio region in the eastern Peloponnese a man was fined €1,312.5 for dropping a lit cigarette end in an open lot.
