Greek authorities on Thursday responded to a small marine pollution incident detected off Xaveriou Beach in the port city of Piraeus.

The pollution, believed to involve oil-based substances, covered an area of about 30 to 40 square meters, according to coast guard officials. Its source remains unknown and is under investigation.

A coast guard patrol vessel and a private anti-pollution ship were deployed to contain and clean the affected area, with cleanup operations ongoing, authorities said.

Marine pollution incidents are periodically recorded in Greece’s busy ports and coastal areas, where heavy shipping traffic and industrial activity increase environmental risk.

Officials said efforts are under way to determine the origin of the spill and assess any potential environmental impact.
